Abstrak

This research aims to explore the organic form of clam shells as a basis for designing aesthetically pleasing and functional chairs by integrating traditional values and modern design approaches. The research method is exploratory-design, including observation of scallop shell morphology, visual sketching, digital 3D modelling, material selection, and 1:1 scale prototype making and evaluation. The design of the chair adopts the fan shape of the scallop shell as the backrest, as well as traditional carving elements such as the pucuk rebung motif on the legs as a symbol of locality. The 3D model was simulated using SketchUp and Rhino software to test proportions, structure and ergonomics. The prototype was made from flexible plywood and solid wood, with a pearl white gloss finish that resembles the natural texture and colour of shells. The evaluation showed that the chair design fulfils the aspects of comfort, structural strength, and aesthetic appeal. These results show that biomimicry and cultural integration approaches can be used to create furniture designs that are innovative, characterful, and have visual and symbolic added value.
